Latest Episode: DEI in the Desert

Hello, friends!

I hope you’re bearing up under the drumbeat of bad news coming every day.

In our latest episode of 90 Miles from Needles, we’re tackling an essential — and often overlooked — truth: desert protection activism isn’t complete without Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) at its core. That’s despite attempts by some to turn DEI into a slur, in an attempt to reinforce the divisions we grapple with in this society.

Too often, the environmental movement has failed to represent the very communities most impacted by climate change, land grabs, and industrial development. This episode explores why DEI is more than a buzzword — it’s a powerful tool that strengthens desert activism, brings more voices to the table, and ensures no one is left behind in the fight to protect these wild, beautiful, and fragile landscapes.

90 Miles from Needles will always feature the work of activists and community leaders who are working to build a more inclusive conservation movement — one where Indigenous voices, people of color, and marginalized communities are not only welcomed but centered in the conversation. After all, a movement that doesn’t reflect the full diversity of people who care about the desert is a movement that’s missing its full strength. And given the outrageous attacks on even the notion of diversity, tolerance, and acceptance of those with different life experiences, it seemed like a good time to say so out loud.

Thank you for joining us in the push for a more just, inclusive, and resilient desert protection movement. The desert belongs to all of us — and it will take all of us to defend it.

Best,
Chris
